Chapter Three

Jack

Wednesday, August 13th, 2014 - 5:33 a.m.

I passed a garage on the outskirts of town. I pulled in the gravel parking lot, noting that there weren't any other cars lined up to be fixed. Part of me thought they might not even be open anymore, but then I saw a gray haired man with a full, unkempt beard walk out of the small office area as I parked.

I got out of my car after I shut it off. As he walked over, I nodded my head at him in greeting. Black grease and who knows what else stained his blue coveralls– which was a good sign (to me) that he knew how to work on a car.

“Hello,” I said when he was about ten feet away.

“Can I do you for?”

“I'm heading out on a road trip, and my check engine light just came on.”

“That could be bad, but dummy lights don't really tell you much.”

“I was wondering if you could take a look at it before I leave the state.”

“Sure. Drive it in the first bay.” He pointed to the only garage opening.

I nodded as I got back in the car. Terrance – the name I'd given the car – started right up, but something was definitely wrong as it was shaking when idling. When I put it into drive, I wasn't sure it would make it the hundred or so feet to the garage. As soon as I stopped inside, the car died. I tried to start it again, but nothing was happening. The mechanic walked in as I got out of the car.

“Won't start.”

“That's not good. Pop the hood.”

I reached back in the car and pulled the hood release.

“Try turning the key again.”

The engine turned over, but it wouldn't catch and fire up.

“That's enough. Stop.”

“Sound bad?”

I walked around to the front of the car, staring at the engine.

“You've got multiple problems, son, but the big one is that someone put sugar in your gas tank.”

“Wow. You can tell that from the way it sounds?”

“That and there's a bunch of sugar where you put the gas in.”

“Fuck.” I was sure Angela was behind the sabotage. “Expensive to fix?”

“Well...” He held out his hand and did some rudimentary math in his head using his fingers. “If it's as bad as I think, you're talking about a grand or more to replace the engine.”

“You can tell all that from the sound?”

He looked at me curiously. “I reckon so.”

“Fuck,” I muttered.

“I can take payments if you leave collateral, but it will take a week or more to get the job done right.”

“That won’t work.”

I looked up, not finding the answer on the cobweb-filled ceiling.

“Sorry. Must be a good road trip. You going to see a woman?”

“What?” I glanced over at the man. “No, no. It's for work actually. I'm going to cover Ferguson, Missouri.”

“What's going on there?”

My head tilted to the side as I peered at him and tried to discern whether he was pulling me leg or not.

“The protests.”

“Hadn't heard about those.
